29 June – PETER AND PAUL (Solemnity)

Gospel: Mt 16: 13-19

When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven.  Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

PROPHETIC LEADERSHIP FOR A GREAT FUTURE: The two Great pillars of Christian tradition, Peter and Paul are handpicked by God for the spread of Christian faith. Jesus found Peter a worthy foundation on which to build the church. Peter hesitated but availed himself for the guidance of the Lord. An authentic Christian leader should be incarnated in daily living situations and be able to respond to realities that surround us. We need people capable of offering alternative visions today especially when there are forces who misrepresent truth. When this happens, leaders must show grit and fortitude that springs from God to erase those forces. Like saints Paul and Peter let us show that eagerness to plant and cultivate Christian faith and values in the communities where we are present. Let uss be in the forefront to start a revolution where life is closely tended and cultivated.

PRAYER: God who sent shepherds to his people, make us enthusiastic and alive with your spirit in the building of your Kingdom.
